Quick answer
Practise SwimSafer skills little and often, alongside stroke work, instead of cramming before the test. Skills learnt over months stay calm and reliable on assessment day, and your coach will tell you when your child is ready to register.
Many parents only start thinking about SwimSafer a few weeks before the test. At 02H Swim School, we prepare from the very first lesson. Every class mixes stroke work with one SwimSafer skill, so your child is always working towards their next stage and is ready when assessment day comes.
In this article we explain what that looks like in the pool, what we think makes a great programme, and why our approach keeps lessons fun instead of repetitive.
What Is SwimSafer?
SwimSafer is Singapore's national water safety programme, developed by Sport Singapore. It teaches swimming and survival skills across six progressive stages, and is part of the Primary 3 school curriculum. Each stage builds on the last, from first bubbles to a 400m swim. For the full background, read Why Every Singapore Child Needs SwimSafer.
Why We Build SwimSafer Skills Into Every Lesson
Many swim schools teach strokes for months, then switch to a few weeks of test drills just before the assessment. We do it differently. Our coaches plan each lesson so that technique and water safety grow side by side.
- Every lesson has a safety skill. Treading water, sculling, floating, safe entries, surface dives or swimming with a life jacket.
- Skills are practised little and often. A short tread today, a longer one next week, so each skill grows naturally.
- Strokes and safety support each other. A good kick makes treading easier. A calm float makes breathing easier. Each skill helps the next.
- Your child always knows their next goal. Coaches track progress against the official criteria for each stage.
What Makes the Best SwimSafer Programme?
When parents compare swim schools, they often look only at pass rates. We believe a good programme does four things well.
1. Lessons never get mundane
Doing the same laps week after week gets boring fast, especially for young children. When safety skills are part of every lesson, each class brings a new challenge, like picking up an object from the pool floor or floating in the star position. Children stay curious and excited because there is always something new to learn.
2. Skills stay fresh, not crammed
Skills practised regularly over months become second nature. Skills crammed in the last two weeks are often forgotten under test pressure. Regular practice means your child performs calmly on the day.
3. Your child is always prepared
Because safety skills are part of every class, your child is always close to test ready, and your coach will tell you when it is time to register. When our coach says they are ready, they truly are.
4. Real water safety, not just a certificate
The goal of SwimSafer is to help children be safer in real water. Practising survival skills every week builds calm habits that stay with your child at the condo pool, the beach, or on a school trip.
The Six SwimSafer Stages at a Glance
Here is what your child works towards at each stage.
- Stage 1 (Yellow cap): water confidence, safe entry and exit, blowing bubbles, front and back floats, and fitting a life jacket.
- Stage 2 (Orange cap): sculling, treading water for 30 seconds and a 25m continuous swim.
- Stage 3 (Green cap): a 50m swim in front crawl and backstroke, survival backstroke and surface dives.
- Stage 4, Bronze (Blue cap): 100m across four strokes, treading water for 2 minutes and a clothed survival swim.
- Stage 5, Silver (Purple cap): timed swims, sidestroke, dolphin kick and the H.E.L.P. survival posture.
- Stage 6, Gold (Black cap): a 400m swim, a head first surface dive and making a float from clothing.

What a Typical 02H Lesson Looks Like
Every coach reads their swimmer and adjusts the plan, but most 02H lessons follow a simple flow:
- Warm up: easy kicking and bubbles to settle into the water.
- Technique: focused work on body position, kicking or strokes, using the BLABT framework.
- Safety skill: one SwimSafer skill from your child's current stage, practised with clear goals.
- Fun challenge: a short game that uses the new skill, so learning feels like play.
Strong basics are what make every safety skill possible. Read why our coaches focus on the basics first to see how kicking and body position set up every later stage.
Questions Parents Ask
Is SwimSafer included in 02H swimming lessons?
Yes. SwimSafer skills are built into every lesson, so your child works on them in every class.

One that teaches safety skills little and often alongside stroke work, with qualified coaches who track progress against the official criteria. That is how we teach at 02H.
How do I prepare my child for the SwimSafer test?
Practise the skills regularly instead of cramming before the test. This keeps skills fresh and helps children stay calm on assessment day.
Will my child get bored practising safety skills?
Not with our approach. Each lesson mixes technique, a safety skill and a fun challenge, so there is always something new to learn.
How do I know when my child is ready for their SwimSafer assessment?
Your coach tracks progress against the official criteria for each stage and will let you know when your child is ready to register.
No swimming lesson can make a child drown-proof. Close adult supervision, pool barriers and safe habits around water remain essential, even for strong swimmers. Read why no lesson makes a child drown-proof.
