What Age Can My Baby Start Swimming Lessons?

Most children start with us from 1 to 2 years old, and 12 months is the youngest we take. Age alone does not decide it. Your coach looks at your child's readiness during the trial class, then advises you on the best time to begin.

Before 12 months, you can introduce your little one to water yourself from around 6 months old, so they feel comfortable when lessons begin. Keep it short, warm and playful: gentle splashes at bath time, water poured over their shoulders, and time in shallow water with you holding them. Stay within arm's reach at all times, and check with your paediatrician first.

Do Parents Get in the Water?

We recommend watching from the poolside. Young children tend to stay close to a parent, and they learn less when someone they know is right beside them, so time with just the coach helps them become independent. Our coaches go slowly in the first lessons so your child can get used to them. Your coach is responsible for your child during the lesson and will ask if they would like your help. Parents and guardians supervise their children before and after the lesson.

What Happens in a 30-Minute Lesson?

Early lessons focus on comfort, not strokes. Your coach goes at your child's pace, with a calm routine that helps them feel safe.

  • Settling in: gradual water entry and a familiar routine
  • Water confidence: splashing, blowing bubbles and getting the face wet when your child is ready
  • Early skills: supported floating and gentle kicks
  • Safety habits: simple pool rules, like waiting for the coach before getting in

From there, your child builds towards independent swimming through our Learn to Swim programme. Worried your child may be scared? That is normal, and a patient start helps.

Are Baby Swimming Lessons Safe?

Your child is taught at a private condominium pool by coaches who are all SwimSafer instructors. Coach Dylan and Coach Renee are also NROC certified and hold Lifesaving 1, 2 and 3 and CPR + AED certificates.

No swimming lesson can make a child drown-proof. Close adult supervision, pool barriers and safe habits around water remain essential. Read why no lesson makes a child drown-proof, or our guide to whether baby swimming lessons are safe.

What to bring: swimwear (with a swim nappy if your child is not toilet trained), a towel, a water bottle, and goggles if your child is comfortable in them.
